As research becomes increasingly global, so too do the challenges of securing it. At the upcoming EU Flagship Conference on Research Security in Brussels later this month, Sapna Marwaha will be delivering an opening keynote for the session "Global perspectives on Europe's enhancement of research security", offering a nuanced view of how institutions across regions are navigating the complex landscape of research risk.
At Formation Consultancy, our work is deeply informed by global engagement. We’ve had the privilege of collaborating with individuals and institutions across more than 50 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Côte d'Ivoire, Denmark, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Hungary, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mali, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Senegal, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Tunisia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe. These diverse perspectives have shaped our understanding of research security as a shared challenge and one that requires a culturally sensitive, context aware and internationally coordinated response.

Her presentation will highlight:
The push and pull factors shaping research security policy.
The tensions between research security and other agendas including open research, academic freedom, and institutional autonomy.
The diverse values and vulnerabilities across high-income and LMIC contexts.
A set of principles for fostering safer, fairer cultures of collaboration, including capacity building, positive messaging, and equity-aware measures.
Sapna’s message is clear: while values and research portfolios may differ across borders, there are common challenges and significant scope for knowledge sharing and cooperation. That cooperation is essential in a sector where trust, integrity, and strategic advantage are increasingly interlinked.

This session promises thought-provoking contributions from a panel of experts, especially for those working with international research partners and seeking to protect both their partnerships and research in an evolving global context.
