Committee Effectiveness Checklist: Practical guidance for stronger challenge, decision-making and collective leadership

Most committees can point to smooth meetings. Fewer can say with confidence that smooth means effective, and that agreement in the room reflects genuine consensus rather than assumptions nobody has tested.

The Committee Effectiveness Checklist sets out seven areas of practice worth examining: purpose and contribution, membership and readiness, focus and priorities, challenge and participation, how decisions actually improve through debate, the chair's role in enabling collective leadership, and the group's willingness to reflect on its own practice. It includes a twelve-point evaluation designed to capture evidence rather than produce a score, along with prompts for turning what the group finds into owned actions with review dates.

It's a practical tool for chairs, company secretaries, and board or committee members who want a structured way to check whether challenge is genuinely welcome, or whether harmony has quietly become the goal.
